Mail modules

It may be practically free to send e-mail, but it is not free. There are many possible costs, including the time spent to sort out misunderstandings. One cost is sorting through returned e-mail. Many people give e-mail addresses that have short lives. For instance, if a hotmail.com account is not used, it will be closed. Many people get e-mail addresses at services like hotmail.com to avoid spam, use for personal messages while at work and so on. When you send e-mail to that account, it will be returned.

When you send out a mass mailing to your customers, how do you deal with the errors?

InfoPoint provides a solution

InfoPoint provides a solution that is incorporated into the Web site.

The first step in the process is to make sure that the user has a valid e-mail address when they sign up. We do this by creating a user profile that requires a password to access. This profile can be for many purposes, it can be billing information for stores, contact information for membership organizations or any other special function the user wants access to. To access the profile the user needs a login name and a password. When the user signs up, the password is mailed to them and using that password they can log in. If they never log in, we assume their e-mail address is not valid.

The site owner can send mail to all the e-mail address that are thought to be valid. On those e-mail messages, there is a special return address. The system reads the returned mail and if the mail is a message saying that the address is not valid, it changes the entry for the user in the user profile marking it as an invalid address. When the site owner sends out messages again, it won't send to that address. When the user logs into the Web site again, it will warn the user that his or her e-mail address is incorrect and ask them to give the correct one.

Notice that having a Web site that is just pages of text and pictures would not allow this to happen. This is a way that InfoPoint can add value. To set this type of a system up requires knowledge of e-mail and an interactive Web site. It is not just an opt-in mail system, or just a Web site, but a system that takes into account the user, the site owner and the technology to make everyone's life easier.
