Organizers of this year's Watsonville Strawberry Festival have decided to
postpone the event until the weekend of July 31.
Originally scheduled for the Memorial Day weekend, the festival will still
celebrate Watsonville and all things strawberry, with music, food, displays
and fun for the whole family. Moreover, the later date will put the
festival at the height of the growing season, ensuring a bounty of luscious
berries for the fair.
Given a little over a month to put the event together, not enough of the
vendors and subcontractors were available to properly stage the event, most
of them having long since been committed to other events on a traditionally
busy holiday weekend, according to Dana Harrison, spokesman for Terry
Pimsleur & Company, who are producing the event.
"The extra time will give us a chance to line up a show that the town
will be proud of," Harrison said, "It will also give us the
opportunity to reach out to the community."
Festival booster Manuel Rodriguez said local strawberry growers are cager to
participate in the festival and welcome the additional time to share their
ideas and led their support.
