The purpose of the NLCS is to serve assistance to low income families with children who are homeless, chemically addicted or both. Shelter, addiction treatment, re-entry education, and other services are provided to allow these individuals the ability to become productive and responsible members of the social mainstream.

A Brief History
New Life Center opened as a shelter program and private addiction treatment program in 1072. The New Life Center began as the formal effort of a group of concerned citizens who were looking for effective ways to deal with homeless, abused, dispossessed and chemically dependent people. It is the oldest combined program in Santa Cruz Over the years the program has expanded to provide a wide range of support services for homeless and/or addicted people with the goal of helping them make a successful transition into healthy, productive living.

Mission



The specific purpose of this corporation is to conduct, administer and coordinate nondiscriminatory community service for the benefit of low income and/or chemically addicted persons, with service priority given to families with children. More specifically:
•To support the establishment of facilities to provide housing, addiction treatment, re-entry education, and other forms of assistance for low-income homeless persons and/or chemically addicted persons.
•To support the work of The Santa Cruz Shelter Project, The Santa Cruz County Emergency Food and Shelter Board, the work of other shelter providers, and to generally advocate for community services to the homeless.
•To support the work of The Department of Alcohol and Drug Problems in the County of Santa Cruz and the State of California, to support the work of other treatment providers, and generally advocate for community services to the chemically addicted.
•To raise funds to increase the scope and efficiency of NLCS programs.
•To advocate professional client services, re-entry principles, proper case management, after-care for all clients and expansion of the quality of client care.
•To maintain all program services in a manner which is consistent with applicable conventional standards, including, but not limited to, all local codes and ordinances and compliance with the State of California Standards for Licensed and Certified Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs.
•To support the work of The Human Care Alliance and The Homeless Action Network, organizations which NLCS belongs as a member agency.

• New Life supports the work of the Santa Cruz Shelter Project, the S.C. County Emergency Food and Shelter Board, and the work of other shelter providers.

• New Life is in cooperation with the Department of Alcohol and Drug programs and other community services to the chemically addicted in the County of Santa Cruz.

Counseling
• Individual treatment plans address the individual needs of all clients.
• Individual and group therapy sessions are used to facilitate the recovery process.

Self-Help
• Residents are responsible and accountable for their own recovery and must secure employment

Outpatient Treatment
• Varies in length and activity. The requirements are assesed per individual need. At a minimum, outpatient clients attend two counseling sessions per thirty day period. If the outpatient fails to attend the minimum sessions, that person is subject to discharge. Outpatient services may include one or more of residential services provided, depending on individual need, with the exception of room and board.

Program Fees
• Since New Life is working to help low income clients, program fees are based on a sliding scale which starts at only $18 per day. Health insurance is accepted.
